THE FIGURES · WORDS THAT STICK

The Conceptual Scrim

Present a difficult truth through language that adds aesthetic or philosophical distance while keeping the truth visible.

Let beauty frame the hard truth without hiding it.

NEWLY FORGED FIGURE

Frame the truth; keep it in view.

A rhetorical device where a difficult or harsh truth is presented through a “scrim”—a softer, more beautiful, or more abstract layer of language. The audience sees the hard truth through the beautiful language, which makes the truth more palatable and often more profound.

Named for a theatrical scrim: a gauze that can appear opaque or translucent depending on how it is lit. Here, the beautiful language is the scrim and the hard truth is the scene behind it.

Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.

How it works.

Name or clearly preserve the difficult fact, then frame it with beautiful, abstract, or reflective language. The aesthetic layer should deepen the audience’s encounter with the truth, not replace the truth with a vague euphemism. When practical details matter—such as who is affected, how many, or why—keep them explicit.

Identify the hard truth
Know what fact, harm, or difficult reality the audience needs to see.
Choose the scrim
Add an image or elevated frame that creates aesthetic or philosophical distance.
Keep the scene visible
Make sure the language still lets the audience recognize the underlying reality.

In plain language: Use beautiful language to frame a hard truth without concealing it. This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.

Let beauty frame the hard truth without hiding it..

Origin: A new original creation; no classical source figure.

A veil that lets the truth be seen (Aesthetic framing)

A Conceptual Scrim places an image, metaphor, or elevated register between the audience and a harsh truth. The language changes the distance and texture of the encounter, while the underlying reality remains recognizable.

A euphemism softens language by obscuring or avoiding an unpleasant fact. The Conceptual Scrim adds aesthetic or philosophical distance while leaving the truth visible. If the framing hides the facts people need to understand, it has crossed into euphemism.

Stunning Original Examples

“The entire exercise of creating beautiful, classically named figures for what are often acts of intellectual or persuasive violence is a form of Conceptual Scrim. We are discussing manipulation, but through the beautiful lens of poetics.”

(The poetic naming creates distance around rhetoric’s capacity for persuasion and manipulation.).

“Instead of saying “The company is ruthlessly firing 10,000 people to maximize shareholder value,” a CEO might say: “We are entering a period of strategic realignment, a necessary winter that will allow for a more vibrant spring.””

(This phrasing risks becoming a euphemism if it hides the layoffs, their scale, or their human impact; the facts must remain clear for it to function as a scrim rather than concealment.).

“Instead of “He was consumed by a bitter, soul-crushing envy,” a biographer might write: “He lived his life in the long, cool shadow of his rival’s sun.””

(The image of shadow and sunlight frames envy as a lasting emotional condition without denying the feeling.).

“Instead of “The battle was a horrific, chaotic slaughter,” a historian might write: “The great, terrible engine of history consumed them all in its gears.””

(The historical metaphor gives the slaughter a broader frame, but should not erase the people killed or the brutality of the event.).

Illustrative applications supplied by the creator; these are possibilities, not client testimonials or product claims.

Literary biography

Give a difficult inner state aesthetic distance while keeping it legible:

““He lived his life in the long, cool shadow of his rival’s sun.””

Historical writing

Place a violent event inside a larger frame without minimizing its human cost:

““The great, terrible engine of history consumed them all in its gears.””

Public communication

Use an evocative frame while stating material facts plainly:

““We are entering a necessary winter—a strategic realignment that will affect 10,000 roles. We will name the impact directly, then explain what this change is meant to make possible.””

THE TRUTH THROUGH THE SCRIM

Let beauty frame what remains visible.

A metaphor can soften the first impact of a harsh fact and make it easier to consider. The scrim works only while the audience can still see the fact behind it.

“Instead of saying “The company is ruthlessly firing 10,000 people to maximize shareholder value,” a CEO might say: “We are entering a period of strategic realignment, a necessary winter that will allow for a more vibrant spring.””

“Strategic realignment” and “necessary winter” risk concealing the number of people losing their jobs. Without a clear account of that impact, this example is a euphemism rather than a transparent scrim.

Use aesthetic distance to deepen the encounter, never to remove the details people need in order to understand the truth.

Reflective Summary

The Conceptual Scrim changes how an audience meets a difficult truth. A metaphor or beautiful image can create distance, making the truth more contemplative or profound. But the scrim must remain translucent: if it hides the facts, scale, or people affected, the language has become a euphemism. The figure’s power lies in framing what is hard to face while still allowing the audience to see it.
