The Definitional Bracket
Pause inside a statement to define a crucial term, then continue with shared meaning in place.
Define the key term before the argument proceeds.
NEWLY FORGED FIGURE
Make the meaning explicit before moving on.
A rhetorical figure where a speaker or writer pauses their main statement to insert a short, clarifying definition of a key term before continuing. This acts as a “bracket” in the flow of thought, ensuring the audience shares the speaker’s precise meaning before the argument proceeds.
Named for brackets [ ], which enclose and clarify an inserted explanation.
Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.
How it works.
State the main thought, pause to define a key term in a short, unmistakable insertion, then resume the original statement. The inserted definition should clarify a term that matters to the argument, not distract from it.
- Mark the key term
- Choose a word whose meaning the audience needs to share.
- Insert the definition
- Pause the main statement and define the word directly, often with a phrase such as “by X, I mean…”.
- Resume the thought
- Return to the original argument with the term’s intended meaning established.
In plain language: Stop briefly to define an important word, then continue the point. This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.
Define the key term before the argument proceeds..
Origin: A new original creation; no classical source figure.
A bracket in the flow of thought (Pedagogical precision)
When an argument depends on a key term, briefly pause to define it in place. The interruption gives the audience a shared meaning before the reasoning continues.
A clarifying clause may add background or nuance. The Definitional Bracket deliberately interrupts the main statement to establish a precise meaning that the argument needs before continuing.
Stunning Original Examples
“To succeed, we must be truly innovative—and by innovative, I mean we must be willing to make our own current products obsolete—or we will be left behind.”
(The inserted definition sharpens “innovative” before the consequence is stated.).
“The core of the treaty rests on the principle of ‘neutrality’—a neutrality, it must be understood, that is not passive, but actively defended—and all parties must agree to this.”
(The bracket makes clear that neutrality means active defense, not passivity.).
“He was a man of honor—honor, in his case, being a rigid adherence to a personal code, even when it caused harm—and that was the source of the tragedy.”
(The definition of honor reframes the character trait and prepares the tragic consequence.).

Teaching
Clarify a term before explaining its consequences:
““We are studying civic trust—and by trust, I mean the expectation that public promises will be kept—and today we will examine what strengthens it.””
Policy and law
Set the meaning of a key standard inside the argument:
““The rule requires a reasonable response—a response proportionate to the risk, not merely convenient to the institution—and that is the standard we should apply.””
Strategy
Define an outcome before evaluating a plan:
““Our goal is resilience—and by resilience, I mean the ability to keep serving people during disruption, not simply recover afterward—so we will measure continuity as well as speed.””
THE DEFINITION AT WORK
Pause to clarify. Then carry on.
Place a concise definition beside the key term, inside the main statement. The definition should settle the intended meaning before the argument resumes.
“To succeed, we must be truly innovative—and by innovative, I mean we must be willing to make our own current products obsolete—or we will be left behind.”
The bracket defines “innovative” before the warning about falling behind.

Reflective Summary
The Definitional Bracket makes a small interruption carry real argumentative weight. A key term is named, briefly clarified, and returned to the sentence with its meaning in view. The pause asks the audience to share the speaker’s definition before the reasoning proceeds. Used well, it makes an argument more precise without losing its forward motion.
