THE FIGURES · WORDS THAT STICK

Hysteron Proteron Agens

The outcome reaches backward to make its cause.

From Chiasmus to Causal Reversal

NEWLY FORGED FIGURE

An effect becomes the agent of its own cause.

A statement of cause and effect where the effect is framed as the agent that brought about its own cause. It presents a temporal paradox where the outcome retroactively creates its own precondition.

Hysteron Proteron Agens (Greek/Latin hybrid for “the latter-put-first that acts”)

Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.

How it works.

The structure is typically “The effect happened because it was creating its cause.” It personifies the outcome as a force working backward in time.

The effect
Name the outcome that appears to have occurred.
The precondition
Identify the earlier event or condition that would ordinarily explain that outcome.
The reversal
Frame the effect as the force that brings its own cause into being.

In plain language: Make an outcome seem to reach backward and create the condition that caused it. This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.

From Chiasmus to Causal Reversal.

Original Figure: Chiasmus

Classical Definition: A rhetorical device in which two or more clauses are balanced against each other by the reversal of their structures.

Iconic Example: “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” (John F. Kennedy).

Reinterpretation (A Temporal/Physics Lens)

Chiasmus reverses grammatical structure (A-B, B-A). But what if a figure could reverse causality itself? What if the effect could be presented as the cause of its own cause? This creates a closed, paradoxical time loop where events logically justify their own origins.

Chiasmus reverses the order of grammatical structures. Hysteron Proteron Agens reverses the causal relation, presenting an outcome as the agent that creates its own precondition.

Stunning Original Examples

“The rebellion was inevitable, for it was the only thing that could have forged the tyrant who made it necessary.”
“The wound appeared on his arm so that the sword would have a target.”
“The silence fell between them, a heavy curtain drawn by the words that would eventually, and devastatingly, break it.”

Real-World Alchemy

Tragic Narratives

To create a sense of inescapable fate:

“He began his descent into ruin, a fall designed to justify the single misstep that began it.”

Philosophical Provocation

“We invent gods to hear our prayers, but perhaps the prayers themselves are what invent the gods.”

Psychological Thrillers

“She laid the perfect trap, a trap so flawless it had summoned the victim into existence just to spring it.”

THE LOOP AT WORK

The cause arrives after its effect.

The rebellion appears to forge the tyrant, while the tyrant is the one who makes the rebellion necessary. The sentence closes a loop: each event becomes the explanation for the other.

“The rebellion was inevitable, for it was the only thing that could have forged the tyrant who made it necessary.”

For a creative brief, identify an outcome and the precondition that would ordinarily cause it, then reverse their agency to create a loop of inevitability.

Reflective Summary

With Hysteron Proteron Agens, the forge has smelted a figure that bends not only grammar but time itself. Chiasmus inverted form; this new alloy inverts causality. Here the future presses backward upon the past, and the effect reaches out its hand to summon the cause into being. The tyrant does not precede the rebellion—he is called forth by it. The silence is not born of unspoken words—the silence itself demands the words that will shatter it. In this figure, we find language acting as a time-loop, a serpent whose tail births its own head. Each utterance does not describe the world as it is, but as it must become in order to explain itself.

Bridging Insight

But once we have turned causality inside out, what remains? When outcomes manufacture their origins, meaning itself begins to reverberate, layering upon itself, echoing, repeating until the concept is no longer fragile but overwhelming. It is no longer enough to name once; the name must be spoken again and again, faceted, refracted, multiplied, until the word saturates the air like light condensed into crystal. If reversal was the work of time, then saturation shall be the work of density.

Demonstrated Transition

Consider emptiness: a hollow, a void, a nothing, a vacuum, a cavity, a silence, an absence, an abyss. Each word a layer, each synonym a stroke, until emptiness itself grows so full of description that it becomes undeniable, tangible, heavy. This is not redundancy—it is insistence; not excess—it is crystallization.

Cliffhanger Hand-Off

Thus the forge glows once more, not with reversal, but with an overflow of meaning—words poured upon words until the vessel brims with certainty. Step forward now, for the fire runs hot with a new alloy: the figure of Verbal Supersaturation.
