THE FIGURES · WORDS THAT STICK

The Legacy Clause

Conclude by showing how present work may matter to people and events beyond the present moment.

Place today’s work inside the story of tomorrow.

NEWLY FORGED FIGURE

Let the present point beyond itself.

A concluding statement that frames the current action or idea as a contribution to a future, often grander, context. It defines the present work by the legacy it will leave behind, imbuing it with a sense of purpose and historical significance.

A clause that defines the legacy of an action.

Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.

How it works.

Use it as a concluding statement. Name the current action or idea, then connect it to a future outcome, inheritance, or story that extends beyond the speaker. Keep the future contribution plausible and specific enough to give the present act meaning.

Name the present work
Identify the action, decision, or idea being concluded.
Extend the frame
Connect that work to a future generation, institution, or larger story.
Leave a legacy
Show what the present may make possible or leave behind.

In plain language: End by showing how today’s work may matter in the future. This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.

Place today’s work inside the story of tomorrow..

Origin: A new original creation; no classical source figure.

Today’s action, tomorrow’s inheritance (Legacy framing)

The Legacy Clause closes by placing a current act or idea within a future narrative. The present contribution gains purpose from the people, institutions, or possibilities it may leave behind.

A goal statement names an intended result. The Legacy Clause frames the present action as part of a larger, often multi-generational story, asking what future people may inherit or tell about it.

Stunning Original Examples

“I might conclude our conversation by saying: “And so we leave this taxonomy, not as a finished work, but as a single, open chapter in the endless book of human expression.””

(The taxonomy is framed as one chapter in a continuing history of expression.).

“The law we pass today will not only solve a present crisis; it will be the foundation upon which our children build a more just world.”

(A law addresses an immediate crisis while becoming a foundation for the next generation.).

“The tree we plant this afternoon is not for us, but for the shade it will offer to the strangers of a future century.”

(Planting today is defined by the benefit it will offer to people not yet known.).

“Write every line of code as if it will one day be studied by a student trying to understand how we built the future.”

(Present engineering choices are placed in the future story of how the next generation understands its world.).

Illustrative applications supplied by the creator; these are possibilities, not client testimonials or product claims.

Public leadership

Connect a present decision to the conditions it may create for future generations:

““The law we pass today will not only solve a present crisis; it will be the foundation upon which our children build a more just world.””

Environmental stewardship

Give a modest act meaning through the future benefit it leaves:

““The tree we plant this afternoon is not for us, but for the shade it will offer to the strangers of a future century.””

Product and engineering culture

Frame quality as a contribution to the people who will inherit and study the work:

““Write every line of code as if it will one day be studied by a student trying to understand how we built the future.””

THE LEGACY AT WORK

Let today’s action reach beyond today.

Close by naming the present work and the future it may help make possible. The ending gives the action purpose by placing it inside a larger story of inheritance and consequence.

“The law we pass today will not only solve a present crisis; it will be the foundation upon which our children build a more just world.”

The law addresses a present crisis, then frames its future value as a foundation the next generation can build upon.

Use this figure when the conclusion should leave the audience thinking about what their choices will pass forward.

Reflective Summary

The Legacy Clause gives the present a horizon beyond itself. It closes by showing how an action or idea may become part of a larger story—one inherited by children, strangers, students, or anyone who comes after us. A law can become a foundation; a tree can become future shade; a line of code can become evidence of how we built. The figure asks us to see today’s work not only by what it accomplishes now, but by what it leaves possible.
