THE FIGURES · WORDS THAT STICK

Liminal Iterant

One refrain. Many worlds.

From Anaphora to Conceptual Inception

NEWLY FORGED FIGURE

Repetition becomes a doorway.

A form of anaphora where the repeated introductory phrase serves as a portal, transporting the listener to a completely new and often unrelated scene or idea with each iteration. It connects disparate worlds through a single, recurring incantation.

Liminal Iterant (from Latin limen, “threshold,” and iterare, “to repeat”)

Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.

How it works.

The repeated phrase should be simple and evocative (e.g., “In another life…”, “Meanwhile, in a room across town…”, “And the machine dreams of…”). Each clause that follows must present a distinct, self-contained tableau, creating a montage effect.

The refrain
Choose a brief, evocative phrase to begin each clause.
The passage
Follow each repetition with a distinct, self-contained scene or idea.
The montage
Let the recurring phrase connect the separate scenes while each return opens a new conceptual room.

In plain language: Repeat one opening phrase, then use each return to enter a different scene or idea. This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.

From Anaphora to Conceptual Inception.

Original Figure: Anaphora

Classical Definition: The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses.

Iconic Example: “We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall fight in the fields and in the streets.” (Winston Churchill).

Reinterpretation (A Cinematic/Dream Logic Lens)

Anaphora uses repetition to build rhythm and emphasis. But what if, like in the film Inception, the repeated phrase could act as a “kick” to jolt the listener into a new level of reality or a different scene entirely? The repetition isn’t a point of stability, but a recurring doorway into a different conceptual room.

Anaphora repeats an opening phrase to build rhythm and emphasis. Liminal Iterant uses that return as a threshold, moving the listener into a distinct scene with each iteration.

Stunning Original Examples

“Somewhere, a clock ticks. Somewhere, a general moves a pin on a map. Somewhere, a child learns the word for ‘goodbye’. Somewhere, a star collapses under the weight of its own light.”
“If you had only asked, I would have told you about the flaw in the plan. If you had only asked, the rain might have fallen differently that afternoon. If you had only asked, the king might still be alive.”
“And so it begins: the slow turning of a key in a rusty lock. And so it begins: the first, hesitant note of a symphony. And so it begins: the migration of a thousand birds, guided by a memory of the sun.”

Real-World Alchemy

Illustrative applications supplied by the creator; these are possibilities, not client testimonials or product claims.

Film & Storytelling

To create a sense of interconnected destiny or parallel action:

“In a boardroom in Tokyo, a man signs a paper. In a village in the Amazon, a tree begins to fall. In a laboratory in Geneva, a new form of life awakens.”

Advertising Montage

For a global brand:

“This is the moment a new idea is born in a garage. This is the moment a record is broken on a track. This is the moment a deal is sealed with a handshake.”

Poetry

To explore counter-factuals and regret:

“What if the letter had never been sent? What if the train had been on time? What if the word left unspoken had been said?”

THE PASSAGE AT WORK

Somewhere, the scene changes.

In the supplied example, “Somewhere” returns as the opening threshold. The clock, the map, the child, and the collapsing star are separate scenes; the repeated phrase carries the reader from one tableau into the next.

“Somewhere, a clock ticks. Somewhere, a general moves a pin on a map. Somewhere, a child learns the word for ‘goodbye’. Somewhere, a star collapses under the weight of its own light.”

For a creative brief, choose a recurring phrase that can introduce different scenes while giving them a shared emotional or conceptual thread.

Reflective Summary

In Liminal Iterant, we stepped not deeper into a single chamber of meaning, but across thresholds, again and again, each repetition a door, each refrain a passage into another room of thought. Language became montage, a sequence of shifting tableaus stitched together by recurrence. The incantation at the start of each clause was no anchor, but a key—turning in lock after lock, each click revealing another world. Here, words no longer merely persuade; they transport. They blur the border between speech and dream, until the listener is caught in a procession of realities, each one self-contained yet bound by a common refrain. This is not the logic of argument but the logic of inception: language as the architect of many simultaneous rooms in the mind.

Bridging Insight

And yet, thresholds alone cannot hold us forever. A passage leads not only to another passage, but to the bond between worlds themselves. If repetition allows us to wander, then another figure waits to bind—to declare that one reality is not merely beside another, but contingent upon it. If Liminal Iterant shows us how clauses can open doorways, the next figure reveals how truths can be tied together, not as possibilities, but as entanglements.

Demonstrated Transition

As long as a door swings open, a world is waiting.

As long as the same refrain is spoken, the thread of connection endures.

As long as the forge burns, the truth that is born here shall not perish.

Cliffhanger Hand-Off

We have crossed the thresholds of language. Now we stand before the law of linkage, where realities bind themselves together, each existing only because the other does. Step forward, and enter the realm of Causal Entanglement.
