THE FIGURES · WORDS THAT STICK

The Recursive Definition

Define a concept through a meaningful return to the concept itself.

Let a concept become the key to its own meaning.

NEWLY FORGED FIGURE

A concept turns back toward its own meaning.

A figure of speech where a concept is defined by using the concept itself, creating a closed, self-referential loop that is not a tautology, but an assertion of the concept’s fundamental and irreducible nature.

Named for its recursive structure: the definition calls back to the concept whose meaning it is unfolding.

Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.

How it works.

Name or ask about a concept, then define it through a sentence that returns to that concept in a new, revealing way. The loop must add an interpretive insight rather than simply repeat the original claim. Keep the concept itself at the center; a repeated word alone is not enough.

Name the concept
Choose the idea whose meaning the sentence will examine.
Turn the definition inward
Use the concept again as part of its own explanation.
Make the return meaningful
Let the loop reveal a feature, experience, or condition that a bare repetition would not express.

In plain language: Explain an idea by returning to the idea in a way that reveals something new about it. This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.

Let a concept become the key to its own meaning..

Origin: A new original creation; no classical source figure.

The concept as its own explanation (Conceptual recursion)

Build a definition that refers back to the concept being defined, but use the return to reveal an irreducible feature or philosophical insight. The loop should do interpretive work rather than merely repeat the same words.

A bare tautology repeats an assertion without adding explanatory content: “It is what it is.” Autodeixis makes a word insist on its own identity, as in “The law is the law.” The Recursive Definition uses a concept to explain itself through a meaningful loop, so the return develops a philosophical point rather than merely repeating a label.

Stunning Original Examples

““What is art? Art is the thing we look at to learn what art is.””

(The sentence returns to art, making the act of looking part of how the concept is recognized.).

““The only true definition of courage is the thing you do when you have none.””

(The definition circles courage through action taken in its apparent absence, framing courage as practice rather than a feeling of fearlessness.).

““What is home? Home is the place you are trying to get to when you are already home.””

(The loop between arrival and longing makes home both a place of belonging and something still sought.).

Teaching

Make an abstract discipline memorable through a definition that folds learning back into its subject:

““What is history? History is the argument we keep having with the evidence we inherit.””

Leadership

Define a value through the practice that brings it into being:

““What is trust? Trust is what people build when they act as if another person’s word matters.””

Brand language

Give a brand principle a compact, self-referential expression:

““What is craft? Craft is the care that teaches us what care can make.””

THE CONCEPT AT WORK

Return to the concept with a new insight.

A Recursive Definition uses the concept it explains, but the return must do more than repeat the same assertion. It should reveal how the concept is recognized, practiced, or experienced.

““What is art? Art is the thing we look at to learn what art is.””

Autodeixis insists on a word’s identity. The Recursive Definition makes a concept part of an explanation that circles back with added meaning.

Reflective Summary

The Recursive Definition makes a concept part of its own explanation. Its return is not an empty repetition: it reveals something about how the concept is recognized, practiced, or experienced. Art becomes something through which we learn what art is; home can be both the place we inhabit and the place we long to reach. Unlike a bare tautology, the loop carries an interpretive insight. Unlike Autodeixis, it develops an idea through self-reference rather than simply asserting a word’s identity.
