THE FIGURES · WORDS THAT STICK
The Semantic Zoom
Shift between granular and expansive descriptions of the same subject to alter its emotional weight.
Change the scale of description. Change its emotional force.
NEWLY FORGED FIGURE
Move the focus. Reframe the feeling.
A figure of speech that moves between different levels of semantic resolution to alter the emotional impact of a subject. It can either “zoom in” to a granular, often clinical detail to create a sense of detachment, or “zoom out” to a grand, abstract context to create a sense of awe or significance.
Named for the camera’s zoom lens, which changes the scale and field of view.
Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.
How it works.
Keep one subject in focus while changing the scale of its description. Use a close, granular view to foreground mechanism or detail, a wide view to connect it to a larger context, or both in sequence. Make the change in scale perceptible and let it shift the audience’s emotional response.
- Hold the subject
- Keep the same person, object, event, or idea in focus.
- Choose a resolution
- Move close to precise details or widen to a larger context.
- Use the shift
- Let the change in scale alter the subject’s emotional weight or significance.
In plain language: Describe one thing close up or from far away to change how it feels. This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.
Change the scale of description. Change its emotional force..
Origin: A new original creation; no classical source figure.
One subject, different semantic resolutions (Scale of description)
Describe the same subject at different scales. A close, granular view can feel clinical or detached; a wide, abstract view can make the subject feel significant or awe-inspiring. The shift in resolution changes the audience’s emotional perspective.
The Narrative Aperture moves through different scales as a story travels from the cosmic to the intimate. The Semantic Zoom changes the resolution of description for a single subject, shifting how the audience feels about that subject.
Stunning Original Examples
“He wasn’t a fallen hero. He was a collection of biological impulses, a series of chemical reactions in his brain that led to a predictable, and frankly uninteresting, outcome.”
(The description zooms in from “fallen hero” to biological mechanisms, encouraging a clinical, detached reading.).
“It wasn’t just a protest. It was the latest expression of a two-thousand-year-old argument between the individual and the state.”
(The description zooms out from one protest to a long-running political conflict, enlarging its significance.).
“You can see it as a simple wedding ring. Or you can zoom in and see it as a crystalline lattice of gold atoms. Or you can zoom out and see it as the physical manifestation of a promise, a tiny, perfect circle of infinity.”
(The ring is viewed at ordinary, microscopic, and abstract scales, with each resolution changing what it represents.).

Science communication
Move between mechanisms and their larger meaning while keeping the same phenomenon in focus:
““At close range, this is a pattern of cells responding to a signal. At a wider scale, it is one part of how the body maintains balance.””
Film and storytelling
Shift the audience’s emotional distance from a character or event:
““The camera lingers on the trembling hand, then widens to reveal the empty station around it.””
Speechwriting
Connect an individual experience to a broader shared context:
““For one family, this is a delayed bus and a missed shift. Across the city, it is a question of who can reliably reach work.””
THE CHANGE IN SCALE AT WORK
Keep the subject. Shift the resolution.
Move from a close, detailed description to a broad context—or back again. The subject stays the same while the audience’s emotional distance and sense of significance change.
“You can see it as a simple wedding ring. Or you can zoom in and see it as a crystalline lattice of gold atoms. Or you can zoom out and see it as the physical manifestation of a promise, a tiny, perfect circle of infinity.”
The ring moves from familiar object to atomic structure to visible promise.

Reflective Summary
The Semantic Zoom changes the emotional scale of a subject by changing how closely language looks at it. A person can be described through granular mechanisms or through the larger conflict their life represents. A ring can be a simple object, a lattice of atoms, or a promise made visible. The subject remains in focus; its resolution changes, and with it the audience’s sense of distance, weight, and meaning.
