The Taxonomy of One
Study one specific instance until its underlying principles form a complete system.
Derive a system of meaning from a single case.
NEWLY FORGED FIGURE
A universe of meaning in one instance.
The act of taking a single, specific example and analyzing it so thoroughly that it becomes a “taxonomy” in itself—a complete, self-contained system of principles, rules, and lessons. It is the art of deriving a universe of meaning from a single instance.
Named for the combination of taxonomy, a system of classification, and one: a complete analytical structure derived from a single case.
Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.
How it works.
Choose one identifiable case, text, event, object, or performance. Examine it closely from multiple relevant angles, then organize the principles, rules, and lessons revealed into a coherent system. Keep the analysis anchored to the chosen instance so the taxonomy grows from evidence in that case rather than from an unrelated collection of examples.
- Select one case
- Choose a specific example with enough detail to sustain close analysis.
- Examine its parts
- Trace its choices, structures, context, patterns, and consequences.
- Derive principles
- Identify the reusable lessons that the case demonstrates.
- Organize the findings
- Arrange those lessons into a self-contained framework rooted in the one instance.
In plain language: Study one example deeply and turn what it teaches into a complete framework. This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.
Derive a system of meaning from a single case..
Origin: A new original creation; no classical source figure.
From instance to system (Single-case analysis)
Take one particular example and examine its structure, decisions, context, and consequences in enough depth to derive a coherent set of principles from it. The single case becomes the source of the taxonomy.
The Taxonomy of Invention creates a broad system from many new concepts within a field. The Taxonomy of One begins with a single, specific instance and derives a complete analytical system from it. One builds outward from multiple inventions; the other goes deep into one case.
Stunning Original Examples
“Our entire conversation is a Taxonomy of One based on the initial prompt. We have taken a single request and, from it, derived dozens of figures, principles, and meta-principles about the nature of creativity and language.”
(One initiating prompt becomes the case from which an interconnected body of concepts and methods is derived.).
“A business school case study that does not just analyze a company’s success, but derives from it a complete “Theory of Disruptive Innovation” with its own laws and principles.”
(A single company case is studied as the source of an organized theory.).
“A literary critic who takes a single sonnet by Shakespeare and, from its 14 lines, extrapolates a complete theory of Elizabethan aesthetics, politics, and philosophy.”
(One poem supplies the evidence for a broader interpretive framework.).
“A chess master who analyzes a single, legendary game and uses it to teach every major principle of strategy, from the opening to the endgame.”
(One complete game is used to reveal principles across the full course of play.).

Business education
Turn one carefully documented company case into a structured teaching framework:
“Follow the decisions, market conditions, and consequences in this one company’s history, then organize the lessons into principles students can apply to other cases.”
Literary criticism
Build an interpretive method from close reading of one work:
“Read one sonnet line by line; let its form, imagery, and argument supply the categories of the analysis.”
Strategy training
Use one complete performance to teach a connected set of strategic principles:
“Study one chess game from its opening choices through its endgame, and derive a framework for evaluating the whole contest.”
THE SINGLE CASE AT WORK
Let one example disclose its whole system.
Stay with one specific case. Examine its structure and consequences closely, then organize the principles it reveals into a coherent framework. The breadth comes from depth of analysis, not from collecting unrelated examples.
“Our entire conversation is a Taxonomy of One based on the initial prompt. We have taken a single request and, from it, derived dozens of figures, principles, and meta-principles about the nature of creativity and language.”
The Taxonomy of One starts from one existing instance and derives a system from it. The Taxonomy of Invention works at the broader scale of creating and organizing many concepts across a field.

Reflective Summary
The Taxonomy of One begins with a single instance and stays close to it. Careful analysis reveals patterns, decisions, structures, and consequences; those findings are then organized into a system of principles and lessons. A company case can yield a theory, a sonnet can open onto an era’s aesthetics, and one chess game can illuminate strategy from opening to endgame. The breadth comes from the depth of attention: one example becomes a complete field of inquiry.
