NEWLY FORGED FIGURE

Frame the kind of knowledge.

An introductory phrase that frames a statement by defining the kind of knowledge it represents. It tells the audience how to think about the information that follows, classifying it as a belief, a scientific fact, a moral law, a historical lesson, or another kind of claim.

Named for its function: it creates a frame for a statement based on epistemology, the study of knowledge and how claims are understood.

Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.

How it works.

Choose a frame that accurately describes the basis of the claim, then state the claim it qualifies. Distinguish documented fact from interpretation or value judgment. A frame guides how an idea is evaluated; it does not make an unsupported claim true, and competing frames may apply to the same event.

Name the frame

Signal whether the claim is factual, interpretive, moral, financial, scientific, or another kind.

State the claim

Present the information the frame is meant to qualify.

Keep the categories clear

Separate evidence from interpretation and explain where perspectives differ.

In plain language:

Say what kind of claim you are making before you make it.

This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.

Name the kind of knowledge before the claim.

Tell the audience how to read the claim

(

Epistemic framing

)

An introductory phrase can classify what follows as a matter of record, a moral judgment, a belief, an interpretation, or another kind of knowledge. The frame guides evaluation before the claim is considered.

“In my opinion” marks a speaker’s stance. The Epistemic Frame identifies the kind of knowledge or reasoning the audience should use to evaluate a claim. The frame is itself rhetorical: it can clarify the basis for a statement, but cannot substitute for evidence or settle disagreements between different standards of judgment.

Stunning Original Examples

“

As a matter of historical record, the treaty was signed in 1919. As a matter of national myth, it was the moment the nation was betrayed.

”

(

The phrases distinguish a documented event from a story a nation tells about what it means.

).

“

From a purely financial perspective, the decision makes sense. From a moral perspective, it is a catastrophe.

”

(

The same decision is evaluated under two different standards.

).

“

The poet will tell you that love is a fire. The biologist will tell you it is a chemical reaction. The truth, perhaps, is that you need both to make a star.

”

(

The lines present poetic, biological, and integrative frames; the closing claim is a synthesis, not a settled scientific fact.

).

Real-World Alchemy

Illustrative applications supplied by the creator; these are possibilities, not client testimonials or product claims.

History and public memory

Separate a verifiable event from the story later attached to it:

“

As a matter of historical record, the treaty was signed in 1919. As a matter of national myth, it was the moment the nation was betrayed.

”

Executive decisions

Make explicit which standard is being used to evaluate a choice:

“

From a purely financial perspective, the decision makes sense. From a moral perspective, it is a catastrophe.

”

Science communication

Mark where an explanation shifts from evidence to metaphor or interpretation:

“

The poet will tell you that love is a fire. The biologist will tell you it is a chemical reaction. The truth, perhaps, is that you need both to make a star.

”

THE KNOWLEDGE FRAME AT WORK

The frame sets the standard for the claim.

An opening phrase can tell the audience whether they are hearing a documented fact, a cultural interpretation, or a judgment under a particular value system.

“

As a matter of historical record, the treaty was signed in 1919. As a matter of national myth, it was the moment the nation was betrayed.

”

The treaty’s signature is presented as historical record; betrayal is presented as national myth. The second frame describes a powerful interpretation, but it does not change the documented event.

Use the frame to make the basis of a claim visible, then provide the evidence or reasoning that supports it.

Reflective Summary

The Epistemic Frame places a claim within a kind of knowing before the claim is heard. “As a matter of historical record” signals evidence; “from a moral perspective” signals judgment; a poet and a biologist may describe one subject through different forms of understanding. The frame helps an audience recognize the standard being applied, but it does not prove the claim or erase the limits of a perspective. Its value lies in making those limits visible.
