The description of a minute detail that contains the entire pattern, essence, or narrative of the larger system it is part of. It is the art of showing the ocean in a drop of water. Holographeme (from hologram and Greek grapheme, “unit of writing”) Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson. How it works. A Holographeme focuses intensely on a single, seemingly small element. The description of this element must use language that could equally apply to the whole, creating a sense of scale-invariant truth. The detail Choose one small, concrete element within a larger system. The pattern Describe the detail in terms that reveal a quality shared by the whole. The scale Let the reader recognize the larger structure inside the small element. In plain language: Show one small detail so clearly that it reveals the character or pattern of the whole. This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it. From Synecdoche to Fractal Representation . Original Figure : Synecdoche Classical Definition: A figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole or vice versa. Iconic Example: “All hands on deck.” (‘Hands’ for the whole sailors). Reinterpretation ( A Mathematical/Fractal Lens ) Synecdoche uses a part to represent the whole. But in a fractal, a part is the whole, in miniature. What if a figure could describe a small detail in such a way that it perfectly encodes the entire essence and structure of the larger entity it belongs to? It’s not just a part standing for the whole; it’s a part containing the whole. Synecdoche lets a part stand for a whole. Holographeme describes a detail as containing the larger system’s pattern, essence, or narrative. In the supplied brand-ethos example, a triple-knotted thread is a small detail, while the engine is the larger system.
