NEWLY FORGED FIGURE

Know the outcome. Discover its making.

A storytelling device where the conclusion or a key element of a story is stated upfront, before the narrative begins. This shifts the purpose of the story from “what happens?” to “how and why does it happen?” It transforms a tale of suspense into a study of inevitability.

Named for its literal foreshadowing of a narrative’s destination before the narrative journey begins.

Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.

How it works.

Reveal the conclusion or a pivotal outcome before the narrative starts. Then tell events forward in chronological order, letting the audience watch causes, choices, and warning signs lead toward the known destination.

Reveal the destination

State the ending or pivotal outcome before the story begins.

Return to the beginning

Start the narrative before that outcome, with its result already in the audience’s mind.

Trace the forward path

Tell events in chronological order so the audience can examine how and why the outcome occurs.

In plain language:

Tell the audience what happens first, then tell the story of how it happened.

This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.

State the destination. Let the story explain how it was reached.

.

Origin

:

A new original creation; no classical source figure.

The destination is known; the journey is the question

(

Narrative framing

)

State the story’s conclusion or a key element before narrating how it came about. Knowing the destination shifts attention from suspense about what will happen to causality, character, and inevitability.

The Narrative Inversion begins with an outcome and recounts events backward toward their causes. The Narrative Foreshadowing also reveals the destination upfront, but then tells the story forward. Its tension comes from watching the known ending take shape, not from reconstructing the past.

Stunning Original Examples

“

The hero would die on a Tuesday. The story of that death, however, began on a sunny Friday morning.

”

(

The death is revealed first; the forward-moving narrative can then trace its causes.

).

“

Let me tell you the story of how a single, misplaced word toppled an empire. The word was “enough.”

”

(

The empire’s fall is announced before the story begins, redirecting curiosity toward how one word brought it down.

).

“

This is the story of a perfect crime. Its only flaw was that it was committed by a man who could not live with the silence that followed.

”

(

The crime’s defining flaw is disclosed in advance, turning the account into an inquiry into the culprit’s conscience.

).

Real-World Alchemy

Illustrative applications supplied by the creator; these are possibilities, not client testimonials or product claims.

Fiction and memoir

Open with a pivotal outcome, then return to the events that led there:

“

“By sunrise, the lighthouse would be dark. The keeper’s last ordinary evening began with a letter at the door.”

”

Investigative storytelling

Name the consequence before tracing the decisions that produced it:

“

“The bridge failed at 6:14 a.m. To understand why, begin with the inspection that ended three years earlier.”

”

Presentations

State the conclusion first, then lead the audience through the evidence:

“

“The launch succeeded because the team delayed it once. Here is what they discovered during that extra month.”

”

THE DESTINATION AT WORK

Reveal the ending. Follow its causes forward.

State a pivotal outcome before the story begins, then narrate forward in time. With the destination already known, each choice becomes evidence in the story of how it was reached.

“

The hero would die on a Tuesday. The story of that death, however, began on a sunny Friday morning.

”

The hero’s death is known; the sunny Friday becomes the beginning of its explanation.

Reflective Summary

The Narrative Foreshadowing gives away the destination so the journey can become the story. Once the outcome is known, each choice, omission, and warning sign takes on new weight. The audience no longer asks only what will happen; it watches how the ending is made, and whether it could have been otherwise. The tale moves forward in time while dramatic irony gathers behind every step.
