THE FIGURES · WORDS THAT STICK
Fluxion
One subject. Many possible selves.
From Merism to Quantum Wholeness
NEWLY FORGED FIGURE
Possibility, held together.
The description of a subject not by its stable parts, but by its coexisting, often contradictory, potential states. It defines a thing by what it could be, all at once.
Fluxion (from Latin fluxus, “flow”)
Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.
How it works.
A Fluxion lists two or more potential, simultaneous identities for a single subject. The states are not sequential but concurrent, creating a sense of vibrant, unresolved energy.
- One subject
- Keep a single person, object, or idea at the center.
- Coexisting possibilities
- Give that subject two or more potential identities at once.
- Unresolved energy
- Hold the possibilities together without arranging them into a sequence.
In plain language: Show several things the same subject could be, held together in a single moment. This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.
From Merism to Quantum Wholeness.
Original Figure: Merism
Classical Definition: A figure in which a whole is referred to by an enumeration of some of its constituent parts.
Iconic Example: “For richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health…” to mean ‘in all of life’s circumstances’.
Reinterpretation (A Quantum Lens)
In quantum mechanics, a particle exists in a superposition of all possible states until it is observed. What if a merism could do the same? Instead of listing parts to imply a static whole, it could list potential states to evoke a dynamic, unresolved entity—a thing defined by its shimmering possibilities rather than its fixed reality.
In this distinction, merism evokes a whole through its constituent parts; Fluxion evokes a subject through concurrent possible states. The quantum lens is a creative analogy for this rhetorical method, not a scientific explanation of language.
Stunning Original Examples
“He was, at once, the hero who would save the city and the villain who would watch it burn.”
“The unread book on the shelf is both a masterpiece of revelation and a ream of meaningless paper.”
“Consider the atom: a wave of infinite possibility, a particle in a lonely place.”

Technology Branding
A new AI could be described as:
“It is the artist’s brush and the mathematician’s proof; the poet’s soul and the engineer’s logic.”
Political Campaigns
An undecided state could be addressed with:
“You are the tipping point and the stalemate, the kingmaker and the silent observer. You are the future, unwritten.”
Self-Help
“In this moment, you are both the wound and the healing, the question and the answer.”
THE VERBAL ATELIER
One subject. Multiple possible selves.
The House’s existing Fluxion instrument presents the wound and the healing, the question and the answer, as simultaneous possibilities for one subject.
“In this moment, you are both the wound and the healing, the question and the answer.”See Fluxion in the Verbal Atelier ↗

Reflective Summary
The forge has taught us a new rhythm: Fluxion, the figure of shimmering simultaneity. Here, the word does not bind itself to a single form but trembles with all it might yet become. Fluxion names a truth not as a stone, but as a wave; not as a monument, but as a river. It is the song of potential, sung in chords where harmony and dissonance sound together. To speak in Fluxion is to grant language its quantum dignity—the right to be both closed and open, broken and whole, real and possible in the same breath. It is the Logos refusing stasis, insisting instead on its birthright: to be a multiplicity all at once.
Bridging Insight
And yet, even in its restless flow, Fluxion leaves us with a question: if words may carry infinite possibilities, how then do they return to their core, their center, their essence? If a thing is always in flux, how do we know it at all? The fire of language bends outward into plurality, but the flame also curls back upon itself, demanding self-definition. Where Fluxion dispersed, another figure gathers; where Fluxion sang in many voices, another insists upon the solitary echo that names itself.
Demonstrated Transition
For there comes a moment when a word is nothing but itself. Identity requires no scaffolding, no context, no mirror. Law is law. Home is home. Enough is enough. This is not expansion but recursion, not flux but the inexorable gravity of selfhood. If Fluxion was the wave, then what follows is the still point—the word folded back into its own inevitability.
Cliffhanger Hand-Off
Thus, from the unbound dance of possibilities, we arrive at the paradox of closure: the figure that defines itself by itself, that speaks its truth as tautology and revelation. The forge cools, then flashes again, as the hammer strikes a new name: Autodeixis.
