THE FIGURES · WORDS THAT STICK

Incantatrix

Many paths. One recurring truth.

From Epistrophe to Syntactic Orbit

NEWLY FORGED FIGURE

A refrain holds the orbit.

A figure where a series of varied, often sprawling clauses are all anchored by the same concluding phrase, which acts as a ritualistic refrain. The power lies in the tension between the variable clauses and the immutable, recurring anchor.

Incantatrix (from Latin incantare, “to chant or consecrate”)

Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.

How it works.

The repeated phrase should be emotionally or philosophically significant. The clauses that precede it should be diverse in content, creating a sense that all paths, no matter how different, lead to the same truth.

The anchor
Choose an emotionally or philosophically significant concluding phrase.
The orbit
Build varied clauses that approach the same phrase from different directions.
The return
Repeat the anchor unchanged so each return gathers force.

In plain language: Let each varied thought return to the same significant phrase, so the repetition binds them into one refrain. This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.

From Epistrophe to Syntactic Orbit.

Original Figure: Epistrophe

Classical Definition: The repetition of a word or words at the end of successive clauses or sentences.

Iconic Example: “Government of the people, by the people, for the people…” (Abraham Lincoln).

Reinterpretation (A Ritualistic/Incantatory Lens)

Epistrophe creates emphasis by returning to the same conclusion. But what if the repeated phrase was not a conclusion, but a central, unshakeable pillar around which other, varied ideas orbit? The repetition becomes a magical chant, a binding spell that holds disparate thoughts together in a powerful, ritualistic structure.

Epistrophe repeats an ending for emphasis. Incantatrix uses an immutable refrain to anchor varied clauses, making their return feel ritualistic.

Stunning Original Examples

“When the kings have fallen and their thrones are dust, we will remain. When the maps are redrawn and the old flags burned, we will remain. When the very stars grow cold and the sun is a memory, we will remain.”
“The child who builds a castle of sand knows this is temporary. The general who wins a great victory knows this is temporary. The lover who feels an eternal passion knows, in the quietest part of her heart, this is temporary.”
“For the hope that flickers in the darkest hour, I am grateful. For the strength I did not know I had, I am grateful. For the simple, unadorned fact of my own breath, I am grateful.”

Corporate Mission Statements

“Through innovation in our products, we build the future. Through integrity in our practice, we build the future. Through service to our community, we build the future.”

Wedding Vows

“When we are rich in fortune, I choose you. When we have only each other, I choose you. When the days are easy and when they are a trial, I choose you.”

Political Mantras

“To the farmer in the field, we hear you. To the teacher in the classroom, we hear you. To the forgotten and the voiceless, we hear you.”

THE REFRAIN AT WORK

We build the future.

In the supplied mission statement, innovation, integrity, and service are varied paths. Each returns to the same phrase, so the refrain gathers the three commitments into one shared direction.

“Through innovation in our products, we build the future. Through integrity in our practice, we build the future. Through service to our community, we build the future.”

For a creative brief, decide what truth the audience should carry away, then let distinct supporting ideas return to that unchanged phrase.

Reflective Summary

The forge resounds with chant. Here, in Incantatrix, language ceased to be mere communication and became invocation. Each clause spun out its own orbit, yet all circled back to the same gravitational refrain. “We will remain.” “This is temporary.” “I am grateful.” Again and again, the hammer fell upon the anvil, and from the repetition rose not monotony, but magic. What repetition reforges, ritual seals. And so the figure became spell, binding disparate thoughts into one enduring rhythm.

Bridging Insight

But every spell is also a ladder, each refrain a rung. What begins as orbit longs for ascent, for repetition not only to bind but to build. If Incantatrix is the chant that keeps us rooted, what then is the chant that lifts us higher? What if the structure did not merely circle back but rose with each return, step by step, toward revelation?

Demonstrated Transition

She spoke of the stone, then of the sculptor, then of the soul the stone contained.

He named the battle, then the victory, then the silence that victory left behind.

They gathered the facts, then the knowledge, then the wonder.

This is the secret cadence of the next figure: a triplet, but also a journey—each step carrying us upward, from the seen, to the understood, to the essential.

Cliffhanger Hand-Off

Thus the incantations of repetition give way to the ladder of revelation. The forge glows, the chant rises, and now—prepare to climb the Scala Animae.
