THE FIGURES · WORDS THAT STICK

Scala Animae

Three steps. A rising understanding.

From Tricolon to Ascending Revelation

NEWLY FORGED FIGURE

A tricolon becomes a climb.

A three-part structure where each successive element moves up a conceptual hierarchy, typically from the concrete to the abstract, or from the external to the internal. The first element is what is seen, the second is what is understood, and the third is what is realized at a soul-deep level.

Scala Animae (Latin for “Ladder of the Soul”)

Definition and original examples by Leonidas Esquire Williamson.

How it works.

The three parts must be thematically linked but represent a clear ascent in abstraction or profundity. The structure should feel like a camera pulling back from a detail to reveal a landscape, and then pulling back again to reveal the cosmos.

The first step
Name a concrete, visible detail.
The second step
Move from the detail to what it means or how it is understood.
The ascent
End with the deeper or more essential realization.

In plain language: Build a linked sequence of three ideas, with each step revealing a deeper level of meaning. This explanation accompanies the original definition; it does not replace it.

From Tricolon to Ascending Revelation.

Original Figure: Tricolon

Classical Definition: A series of three parallel words, phrases, or clauses.

Iconic Example: “Veni, vidi, vici.” (I came, I saw, I conquered.) - Julius Caesar.

Reinterpretation (A Narrative/Theological Lens)

A tricolon presents a list of three, often with the third providing a twist or completion. But what if the structure could be imbued with a sense of escalating revelation? What if the three parts represented not just a list, but a journey through three distinct levels of understanding: the Physical, the Mental, and the Spiritual/Essential?

A tricolon arranges three parallel elements. Scala Animae makes the sequence an ascent: each element moves from what is seen, to what is understood, to what is realized.

Stunning Original Examples

“He saw the crown (the physical object), he understood the power (the mental concept), and he felt the solitude (the essential truth).”
“She learned the words of the spell, then the grammar of the magic, and finally, the silence from which it was all born.”
“First the battle, then the victory, then the peace.”

Real-World Alchemy

Educational Philosophy

“We teach them the facts, then we teach them the methods, and finally, we teach them the wonder.”

Product Evolution Story

“We started with a faster chip, which led to a smarter device, which created a more connected world.”

Personal Development

“Conquer the task, then master the skill, then become the person who no longer needs it.”

THE ASCENT AT WORK

Facts. Methods. Wonder.

The educational example begins with information, rises to the method for using it, and reaches wonder. Each step changes the level of understanding, so the three-part sequence becomes a progression rather than a list.

“We teach them the facts, then we teach them the methods, and finally, we teach them the wonder.”

Reflective Summary

The forge has shown us the power of threes, but not as mere lists or rhetorical ornament. In Scala Animae, the tricolon has been transfigured into ascent—a ladder of the soul. Each step rises from the stone of the visible, to the thought that interprets it, to the silence that reveals its essence. The crown becomes power, and then solitude. The battle becomes victory, and then peace. The spell becomes words, then grammar, then the silence from which magic itself is born. Here, rhetoric becomes pilgrimage, and every sentence is a staircase spiraling toward the eternal.

Bridging Insight

Yet ladders, though they lift us, can also tremble. For ascent implies tension, and every rung climbed makes the air thinner, the contradictions sharper. What happens when the truths we discover at each level collide? When the crown is both power and solitude, when the victory is also loss, when the silence that births magic also devours it? The ladder of revelation may lift, but it may also crack beneath the weight of opposing truths.

Demonstrated Transition

The law declares all are equal. The law is applied only to the poor.

The river sings in the company’s report. The river itself is dead.

He vowed to die for her. He lived to grow old without her.

These are not paradoxes at rest, but truths in collision—truths that consume one another, leaving only the ashes of what is unstated, unbearable, and undeniable.

Cliffhanger Hand-Off

Thus from the upward clarity of Scala Animae we pass into the volatile crucible, where truth itself begins to fracture, implode, and annihilate. The forge does not merely sing now—it hisses. Brace yourself, for the next figure waits: Veritas Interfecta.
